Mindfulness is all about nurturing your own emotional wellbeing; it’s crucial when running your own business.
Here, Kish Modasia, Mindfulness Expert, explains the benefits of being more mindful and encourages you to take time-out for yourself.
Our busy, full lives can leave us tired, stressed, angry and with no thinking space. As beauty business owners, self-care tends to fall much lower down the priority list. Could this be different and if so how? By having a daily practice, of even a few minutes, of Mindfulness, we can bring calm and clarity in our fast paced lives.
Mindfulness – Where to start?
YOU KNOW THOSE SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS WE GET ON AN AIRCRAFT?
The part where we’re told to put our own oxygen mask on first so we can help others? Well, I think that’s a good metaphor for what we need to do right now in our everyday lives. We are so busy taking care of everyone else that we forget to take care of our number one asset – OURSELVES.
Mindfulness is an ideal way to give yourself some headspace. It is crucial in our area of work: when we take care of ourselves it ripples across to our clients and the other people we interact with.
THINK OF EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING AS A BANK ACCOUNT
To buy food, pay the mortgage or go on holiday we need a healthy bank balance with some reserves. In the same way we need to build up our emotional bank balance. As we learn and regularly practice more relaxation techniques, the emotional bank balance builds up so that when we are hit with those tough challenges, we are more stable and able to deal with them. By being mindful and more present through simple tasks like conscious breathing and gratitude, the emotional bank balance can be topped up easily, regularly and daily.
START BY DOING FIVE MINUTES A DAY
Five separate minutes and then build it up. This way you will rewire the connections in your brain regularly and build the ‘muscles’ for change.
So use the tool that is with us all the time! Our BREATH.
Breath is our life source and yet we completely take it for granted! Simply breathing consciously will help you relax, notice what’s going on in your body and around you.
SOME MORE USEFUL RELAXATION TIPS:
Take a minute or two to become simply aware of your breath and see how that will help you relax.
Spray the room between each client and clear the energy. This is good for you and your next client.
Start a gratitude diary and each day note five things you are grateful for.
Go for a walk in the garden or just away from your working space.
Listen to some music! Simply listen to the music without doing anything else.
Let out a nice big sigh maybe several times a day.
Rest your legs up a wall.
Have a proper coffee / tea break.
Sit down for lunch and nourish your body mindfully.
Do some gentle stretches.
Your brain will need to learn to relax and it will take time. Be patient as you are using a new muscle, and like a physical one, it needs time to get fit. Unfortunately, it doesn’t ache like a physical muscle when it’s overworked, instead we just get stressed, tired and busy.
The most important thing is to begin. Start with one thing and practice, practice, practice.
“Small changes have a BIG impact because if you change nothing, NOTHING changes.”
